Guided Traverse of the Aonach Eagach, Glencoe

Join our team for a traverse of the breath-taking Aonach Eagach ridge and its two Munros in Glencoe

Aonach Eagach Outline

The Aonach Eagach is possibly the most famous ridge challenge in mainland Britain. Dominating the skyline as you travel through Glencoe it is hard not to notice the outstanding ‘Notched Ridge’ towering above the road. It is a substantial challenge covering some 10km, and includes two Munros; Meall Dearg and Sgorr Nam Fiannaidh, and a good dose of exposed scrambling thrown in for good measure. Your Aonach Eagach guide will be experienced and knowledgeable, having completed the traverse in a wide variety of conditions allowing you to trust their judgement and provide you with a truly memorable experience.

He was great company and very good at explaining to me how to deal with tricky parts on the ridge and using ropes. I felt completely at ease and we hoped along the ridge on a stunning autumn day. So I'm now delighted I've got a go-to company for my next adventure! read less

Ken's confidence was apparent and we were at ease the whole way, even when confronted with the pinnacles .
My wife isn't the best by any means at the climb downs, but Ken was patient whilst I helped coax her feet into the appropriate holds.
We had a great day out and were able to relax and let Ken work out the ways across and down.
We will use West Coast again in the future, especially if going over for the Cuillins.

5 star rating Aonach Eagach Traverse Had a fantastic day out on the Aonach Eagach ridge traverse with Ken guiding. I booked very last minute but found the company to be extremely accommodating of this. It was my first time doing any real scrambling and I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone else. I will definitely be booking further courses with West Coast Mountain Guides, including planning a Skye Cuillin traverse.

  • 5 star rating Aonach Eagach Ridge I can’t recommend them enough.
Jon the guide was very knowledgable, professional and also provided a good laugh.
You could ask him anything about the mountains and the Aonach Eagach ridge and you would get an answer.

The AO traverse went perfect! Couldn’t have asked for anything more! Iain’s knowledge of the route was obvious from the outset which helped me calm my nerves a little bit (couldn’t sleep the night before from the adrenaline coupled up with my worry that I’ll either slow down the party or put anyone in jeopardy - the common worries before you are about to take on a new challenge kind of thing).
I was looking to do things outside my comfort zone and the guided traverse of the AO with Iain did just that. Iain’s patience coupled up with a pace suited for the group was a welcoming comfort for me and I’m sure the other two guys (Scot and Ian) would agree with that. All in, an awesome experience which was a few months later on replicated by the ascent of the Curved Ridge on the Buachaille Etive Mor with Ken himself as a guide. What a fun and exhilarating day from start to finish! Once again, the route knowledge and professionalism stood out from the outset which helped to calm the nerves and helped us to get into "the zone" and allowed us to enjoy the beauty of the big Big Bookle :)
Thank you WCMG, Skye next year!! ;) More

5 star rating Aonach Eagach Ridge Just completed the Aonach Eagach Ridge with Gillian, our West Coast Guide for the day. We had a great day and despite 4 seasons in one day weather we still had some fantastic views over the Aonach Eagach Ridge.
Thanks to Gillian for all her knowledge, technical skills and great chat.
Will definitely recommend West Coast Mountain Guides and would definitely use them again.

I arrived to find myself part of a mixed group of six, all of whom had done quite a lot of hillwalking but some without climbing/scrambling experience. We had two guides on the first day, Ken and Steve, and a third, Mike, for the rest of the trip. It was immediately clear that these guys are the best. Utterly capable and in control, they manage to keep a close eye on safety while remaining relaxed and sociable. They all have interesting stories to tell, bags of experience and a very sorted approach to life and what they do. On the rock they managed to be encouraging without being patronising and had clearly sussed our relative abilities quickly. The crux moments (great climbing word of discouragement) went by with ease (relative ease anyway) and all of us managed the tricky bits and hit all 11 summits. There are plenty of other tricky routes on the Munros (see the review of Aonach Eagach below) and I shall certainly be booking with West Coast again to tackle some of these. Highly recommended More

I had high hopes for the week but quite a few concerns as well. Most of the concerns were based around the fact that I do virtually all of my walking alone. This is a choice as it allows me to go where I want at the pace I want and I was concerned that I'd be forced to trundle along slowly and the days would be disjointed and frustrating as a result. I thought maybe the roped bits would be very restrictive and possibly patronising for those of us who scramble a bit without a rope. I've walked most of the other "Scrambly" munros (Aonach Eagach, Liathach, Forcan Ridge etc) with no concerns at all but the Inn Pinn, Sgurr Nan Gillean, and Am Basteir worried me to put it mildly. In fact I thought Ken and Steve manged the group really well so the day flowed nicely with sensible breaks but I could walk as fast as I wanted. The roped were used perfectly - I rarely felt restricted by being roped up and most of the time I was very glad of the security. Clearly I've not abseiled for a long time and I struggle to trust the system and let go of the rock with my hands, but Ken and Steve just re-assured and instructed in a drama free way. I'm very pleased I went to the Cuillin with a guide as it really enhanced the experience, and I'm really pleased I chose West Coast Mountain guides.
So for me it's a very clear 10/10 for the week, I really can't thank you enough for helping me cross of the munros which had been concerning me for quite a while. More

Full Description

Course Outline:

The typical itinerary begins with a steep walk up the South East Spur of Am Bodach. Once standing on this Munro top the real scale of the challenge is laid out before you with truly amazing views along the ridge and out towards Loch Leven and the Ballachulish Bridge. The initial challenge of descending a short steep chimney sets the mood for the day, afterwhich only a few exposed sections lead to the summit of your first Munro – Meall Dearg. The ground between the two Munros is what the Aonach Eagach is famous for: exposed but amenable scrambling up short chimneys, along picturesque arêtes and around the formidable ‘Crazy Pinnacles’ before basking in the glory atop the second and final Munro, Sgorr nam Fiannaidh.

The descent from the Aonach Eagach gets a fearsome reputation and rightly so given that taking the wrong turn can lead you into very steep and potentially dangerous ground. Having spent the day with your guide they will be able to assess the best and most enjoyable way for you and your partners to safely descend.

If you are new to scrambling or anxious about using technical climbing equipment please don’t worry we are here to help. Throughout your time with West Coast Mountain Guides we will endeavour to teach you the technical skills needed to traverse the Aonach Eagach. Your guide will instil confidence in your equipment and manage all of the ropework in ascent and descent allowing you to enjoy this exciting and unique experience.

Course Details:

The price includes guiding and instruction and free use of harness and helmets. Accommodation is not included but we can help make arrangements or recommend suitable places to stay whilst visiting the Glencoe.

Ratio:

Kit Requirements

Socks –Go for a medium to thick pair of synthetic or wool/synthetic blend socks.

Thermal/Base Layers –A thermal or wicking top is far better than cotton.

Fleeces –At least one fleece layer for your upper body. If you get cold easily perhaps add a fleece gilet/vest to your layering. Having an extra fleece top or synthetic layer in a waterproof liner at the bottom of your rucksack is useful if cool conditions are likely to be encountered.

Windshirt or lightweight softshell jacket –Ideal for dry conditions.

Walking trousers –Polycotton, polyester or softshell is ideal.

Warm Hat & Gloves –A warm hat can still be very useful even in summer.  For Skye, leather work or gardening gloves, which are cheap and durable are ideal. Remember that even in the height of summer, with a bit of rain and wind, it will still be quite chilly.

Waterproof jacket and over trousers ( Outer shell clothing) –The trousers should have at least a knee length zip enabling them to be fitted over boots.  Lightweight waterproofs are ok.

Rucsac –A medium volume sac (30 -40 litres) is best for mountaineering. Use a strong plastic rucsac liner to keep the contents dry. External Rucsack covers have a habit of blowing away and don’t work as well as an internal liner.  Everything needs to fit inside your sac.

Bivvy Bag –A large person sized poly or foil survival bag is the minimum requirement, essential.

Gaiters or Stop-tous –Useful, but not essential. Not really necessary on the Skye Cuillins.

Head Torch –Even in summer it’s good practise to carry a small headtorch.

First Aid kit –A small personal pack including medication for blisters. Suncream and sunglasses if good forecast.

Compass/Map –(OS or BMC/Harveys)
Harvey maps produce the best map for Skye. The map should be weather-proofed in a clear plastic map case or covered with clear sticky back plastic.

Whistle/Watch

Waterbottle –1 to 2 litres, maybe more during hot weather.

Lunch & Spare Food

Trekking Poles -These are optional, but useful particularly in descent.

Boots –For scrambling, boots which have good lateral stiffness, such as B1 rated boots, are useful.

Helmet –Please bring one along if you can. We have DMM helmets available.

Harness –Please make sure the harness fits over all clothing and can be put on over boots and crampons. Adjustable leg-loops are preferable for ease of fitting.

Belay device, two HMS Carabiners and one 120cm sling –We can provide you with these if you don’t have your own.

Programme Outline

• Speak with your West Coast Mountain Guide roughly four days prior to your traverse
• Meet your guide (usually at the Clachaig Inn) at 8am and be provided harness and helmets whilst discussing a plan for the day
• Traverse the Aonach Eagach
• Expect to be out on the hill between 6 – 9 hours
