Scottish Winter Mountain Courses

Winter hillwalking, mountaineering and climbing in Scotland, and in particular on Ben Nevis, is world famous. We offer courses for everyone, whether you are just starting out or have years of experience under your belt.

Scotland is renown for its challenging conditions, which we are grateful for as they are essential to build up the ice and rime which makes winter climbing here so unique. Winter mountaineering, ice climbing and hillwalking activities are invariably affected by the weather and the current snow and ice conditions. To enjoy this challenging environment it is just as important to develop your skills and understand the hazards as it is to experience your dream route or develop your climbing technique.

All of our guides and instructors that work on our Scottish winter courses have excellent local knowledge accumulated over many years of personal winter walking and climbing. They are able to ensure that the most is made of every day in the mountains meaning anyone attending with us will gain useful insights on how to plan your day and get the best out of it, even during the most challenging weather.

  • 5 star rating Cuillin Ridge, Skye You want to feel you're on an adventure, while having elements of serious risk mitigated. Most guide companies do this. You want to be encouraged, not judged or patronised, and sometimes you just want to revel in silence - WCMG are good at this. You want to have mountain experiences which will live as memories for a long time to come - this is where WCMG excel.

5 star rating Cuillin Ridge Traverse Another super trip for Scottish mountaineering with West Coast. This time Skye in summer weather. Great time with the super capable and chirpy Jack Morris. First class knowledge of the ridge and great companion, enabling us to complete the Traverse in under 2 days in good style. Thanks!

5 star rating Epic Cuillin Ridge Traverse Pete guided me brilliantly on an epic traverse of the Cuillin Ridge in September 2020. He very quickly assessed my ability (or lack thereof!) and knew exactly when he needed to rope me up, when a belay was required, and when I was competent enough to go it alone. An excellent guide whose services I would be more than happy to use again.

  • 5 star rating Cuillin Munros We had a great 4 days with Ben tackling some of the Cuillin Munros. We had only had 2 days rope training in advance, but Ben improved our skills and confidence to such an extent that 6 Munros were achieved with the In Pinn on the last day a never to be forgotten experience. Ben was extremely knowledgeable both in terms of rope skills and the difficult route finding in... read more

5 star rating Great days, great ridges, great fun After a great experience with WCMG in January winter mountaineering we can back to do some classic rock routes. The weather lined up perfectly and we tackled some fairly sizable ridges that required the conditions. Ken was great as always, helping us move quickly and providing helpful advice along the way that we can take to our next experiences.

5 star rating Highly recommnded I had a guided ascent of the In Pinn with Tom and it was excellent. He was highly qualified and made me feel comfortable at all times, notwithstanding the foggy conditions! Would highly recommend and look forward to booking with West Coast again.

  • 5 star rating Climbing the Cuillin Munros Ken & Mike were excellent guides on our Cuillin adventure. We were lucky with some excellent weather most days but throughout I felt safe with Ken and Mike. The Cuillins are not for the faint-hearted - our group found Sgurr nan Gillean west ridge more challenging than the Inn Pinn. The other main challenges for me were some of the down climbing and the steep scree slopes. Great patience from... read more

5 star rating Excellent guided days in the Cuillins My friends and I have had two trips to Skye with West Coast Mountain Guides guiding us on the Cuillins. Both outings were excellent. The booking and organizing process was well organised, informative and seamless. Our guides were excellent, on our days with them we felt we were looked after by really skilled professionals. They were always good humored and very encouraging to some of us (me!) that needed... read more

5 star rating Top notch, relaxed, well delivered. The Skye Munros - a ronseal trip, it did exactly what it said on the tin. No messing about, despite inclement weather you never felt at risk. Experienced, knowledgeable guides who knew the Cuillin well. I would definitely recommend to anyone with a sense of adventure or the munro bagger who needs to tackle the dangerous peaks on the Cuillin with the assurance of being guided by professional climbers.

  • 5 star rating Skye Cuillins munros Fantastic week on Skye with west coast guides Ken and Josh up on the cuillins. Both guys were fantastic and knew the mountains and provided top notch tuition and equipment. They both instilled confidence and enabled me to tackle some of the toughest mountains I have ever had the pleasure of walking.
Their banter and chat was good too

5 star rating Super guides for Skye Cuillin Ken and Tom led us on a 4 day Munro-bagging course on the Cuillin in Skye. They did a great job of making us feel safe throughout despite the nerves, and showed us a great variety of terrain. They were upfront about potential limitations due to weather forecast, but still gave us the option to head up to the ridge anyway in case the forecast was wrong.
    Would definitely use again.

5 star rating Amazing single and multi pitch climbing in Glen Nevis It was great that despite the rain, we were able to adapt and still climb, as many people would call off a climb due to rain. It was also good to be able to reinforce my trad skills on both single and multi pitch routes
